Martinair to start operation to Nepal

Martinair to start operation to Nepal

Martinair from The Netherlands will operate a weekly flight from Amsterdam to Kathmandu. This flight will replace the 'Dutch connection' of Transavia airlines; which will be discontinued from April onwards. The flight schedule will be weekly; to start on 8 October 2003.

Nepalese Consul General Cas de Stoppelaar disclosed that Transavia airlines will stop its successful Kathmandu operation due to cost cutting and strategic reasons. "However; Martinair's alternative is much better"; he said. "It is a bigger airline. They will fly with a wide body Boeing 767 with 248 seats in the economy and 24 seats in the business class. This flight is not only important for the Dutch market; but also for the rest of north-west Europe."

The negotiations took a long time. "It is now depending on the final approval of the Nepalese authorities;" says Sander Heijmans; senior vice president of Martinair. "We are convinced that we can make the flight a success. Amsterdam is well known for its excellent transit facilities; with fast connection to the rest of Europe and the USA."
